LUCY, I'M HOME!

July 4, 2016

Hopefully, my brief reports on Decades Binge on CBS 2.2 are not too boring.  It's the channel that brings back old TV shows and from the brief bumper just now may also show a wonderful 1953 feature film "Invaders from Mars!"

2.2 features some Lucy shows, too. I watch with the sound off.  The beauty of this technique is that the plot is not difficult to follow and I can practice lip reading.

July Fourth brings back lots of memories, including building floats with my Explorer Scout pals on behalf of the local Elks Club.  I remember needing a bolt for something and charging it to the Elks.  One bolt... unsure about the nut.

It'll be a quiet day here at the ranch.  I've just had a little back and forth with an old scouting friend who lives in Grand Junction.  He is curious about what 'art' is.  As we all must be from time to time.  The recent article in The New Yorker about a young Turk who is making it big as a hustler for Christie's Auctions discusses the high end collector art world.  As I recently decided, it's all about attitude!  Whether or not the Emperor has no clothes is pretty much up to what we are told by 'experts.'  That reminded me of a trick that was played on some Boy Scouts at a National Jamboree many years ago.  A couple of older attendees went to a trading tent and talked about 'home made' patches that were being traded and were very valuable.  A bit later, another guy in cahoots with the first guys casually tosses some of those home made patches on the table and asks if anyone is interested.  The kids who had heard the 'story' of the valuable patches got very excited and traded some actually valuable patches for the 'home mades.'

It turned into a lesson in honesty when the first guys came back and confessed and admonished the younger kids to be careful what they were doing.  It might be that in the 'ART' world today that the gazillions of dollars that high end collectors are paying for famous works of art may be a similar deal?  Do we get into a feeding frenzy thinking that we can turn a painting over for millions in profit?   Check out this article (it's long) if you want some insight into the world of Big Time Art!

Happy Fourth! 2016

  1. So scared of sand dunes due to seeing that movie on Channel 9 Movie Theater. They would run one movie every day and twice on Saturday and Sunday, so nine chances. I must have watched "Invaders From Mars" at least 20 times over the years. Super cheesy and still scary!
