ART OPPORTUNITIES! GO FOR IT!!

July 13, 2016

Bastille?  Where were all all the folks gathered on the 13th? Allons enfants de la patrie!!!  Okay, I had to look it up, but I remembered the tune!  A national anthem that is singable! Vive la France!

As Pokemon Go brings the masses to the streets, I recall those little inflatable Japanese dolls and Tickle Me Elmos that all of a sudden everyone had to have.   Hula Hoops?  If this fad brings people together, even if they are bumping into trees and falling off curbs, I'm for it.  If we have a medium of communication that is non-threatening.. something that makes us smile at one another, then we have a chance at making peace.

Medium for Peace? Art?  I have finally given in to the locals and the City of Glendale and shall refer to the Service Station in the Adams Square Mini-Park as the Gas Station.  That's what I called it in 2008, but really wanted to have it referred to as a Service Station after seeing an identical little GAS station up in Pasadena with the actual word "Service" on it.  But!  I digress.

The City of Glendale will accept applications for temporary artwork in the Gas Station for the next few days. The space is ideal for installation artwork and even though the City has no budget to help the artists with their installations.. it's all at your own expense, it really is a great little venue AND... thanks to the efforts of the powers that be, the required insurance is no longer the responsibility of the artist. (Yay!) I live in the neighborhood and will be happy to help anyone who may be chosen to do an installation.  I've learned a lot about the space with the two installations that I've had there.

The City of Glendale is  also looking for artists to decorate those metal boxes around town. There may be a stipend for that work!

I'm sending a fan letter to Dallas Police Chief David Brown congratulating him on his heart felt eulogy of the fallen officers that were memorialized yesterday.  It is time for real communication.. better communication and for us all to mend fences as we can.  Of course, Robert Frost's admonition in "Mending Wall" that "Good Fences make good neighbors" is one to respect.  Let's just be as respectful as we can be and ignore the attempts by trolls and rabble rousers to stir the pot.  Respect and Communication.    And.. art!  Make art!
