NEW DISCOVERIES

August 1, 2016

When I started this series of images back at winter solstice, the trees there to the right had different personalities.  The 'gorilla' with the plume 'menacing the Shoe Factory' has lost most of his shape and the plume is longer and bushier.  The T Rex above him is changing and I can almost imagine a King Kong face in it.  That's what these photos are about.  Changing.

I'm not much good with change.  I like the comfort zone of things being rather the same.  Of course, we don't often get anywhere w/out some changes. I hope I can find a way to harmony with the friend with whom I am still in trouble and that whatever changes come from that, I hope, will be tolerable.

The LAMAG Open Call has sent out snail mail invitations!  The number of participating artists was not as large as I'd thought, only something over 300. Still the gallery has taken in over $6,000.00!  I will lobby our local arts folks here in Glendale to consider the same thing for The Brand and/or The Gas Station.  The upcoming Brand Works on Paper Show, sponsored by The Brand Associates is a little more exclusive, with Laddie John Dill as the juror. When you submit, you have no idea if you'll pass muster. They keep the entry fee regardless.  The great thing about the LAMAG Open Call is that no one is turned away.  Simple guidelines:  basic restrictions of size and no live animals, etc. (I found a dead fly on my piece today!).. but it's a great gathering to benefit all involved.

Of course, the LAMAG is larger staffed than the Brand, but I've volunteered to help in the past and others, I am sure would step up to make an Open Call for the Brand: OCB! something that could add to the coffers and allow many heretofore unsung artists to have their work displayed in an outstanding gallery.   If only 300 artists submitted, that would be about perfect for a salon style hanging at The Brand.  $6,000.00?  or more?

The similar installation we did four years ago with thejulyfourthproject at the Gas Station in Adams Square MiniPark was a similar thing, but there was no fee and only one artist was denied entry
for not following the guidelines.

What odd spacing?? Yikes!   http://july4thgasstationproject.blogspot.com/

I financed that one with the cooperation of the City of Glendale.  It was really pretty easy and a good time was had by sixty artists and their friends.  And, the neighbors.

Soon we may see more City sponsored installations in the Gas Station, chosen by folks who prefer that I not be included.  Why mention this? Because it hurts my feelings to be excluded with no explanation, after I have been a major advocate to keep the space active with ANYTHING that beats the space being empty.

This post will be one of many invitations to see the Open Call in Barnsdall Park starting on August 14, 2016.  I'll be happy to meet anyone who wants to participate in the show by coming to Play. Gallery is open Thursdays through Sundays from Noon to Five until September 18th.

August!  Summer in California.  Happy Birthday to Linda the Hawk on Wednesday!
