CHILLY SUNDAY

January Ten, Sweet Sixteen

There appears to be a witch advancing on the critter who menaces the gorilla menacing The Shoe Factory today.  The subtle changes from day to day: the shadows and the movement of the trees and the clouds (or no clouds) on the horizon across the hill may not be dramatic, but they are very interesting to me.  Of course, I'm now paying attention much more carefully than ever before.  I think it's those subtle changes that I have in mind with this photo thing.

Saw a terrific movie from Belgium last night: The Brand New Testament.  It's in French with actors we mostly do not know. God lives in Brussels and writes 'the Rules' on an old PC while terrorizing his family.  His son has died, but there are statues and a painting of The Last Supper where things change.  Yolanda Moreau plays the mom and she looked familiar.  I now remember her from Amelie.  Actually, the structure of the film reminded me of that film a lot. Fantastic! Highly recommended along w/ The Fencer from Estonia.

NFL playoffs?  It's about zero degrees in Minneapolis where the Seahawks meet the Vikings to move up toward the Super Bowl.  I am not a football fan, but the spectacle of our 21st Century gladiator trip is undeniable.  I wish that in Bridge of Spies, where it's supposed to be cold from time to time and Spielberg matted in clouds of exhalation from the actors, had gone to Minnesota or somewhere truly cold to see what real breath turning into steam really looks like.  Geez, Louise!  It is four below zero in Minneapolis right now.  Seeing these guys in short sleeves and the hard hits give new meaning to 'bone chilling cold!' brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! The Seahawks going into the second quarter are having a tough time.

Watching TV while writing tends to have me narrating what I see.  Just saw a Corona cerveza commercial where the very cute women in bikinis open two bottles of brew for their boyfriends. The grateful men  drink from the bottles.  The women in the last shot have their backs to the camera and only the men are drinking.  We never see the women hoist a bottle except to give the bottles to the guys. Next commercial segues from the seventies with young men and women watching football .. a Polaroid SX 70 shoots a photo, the women have beer and we then cut to modern times and those weird aluminum bottles. Men and women wield the brew.  Advertising!
