THURSDAY 2/4/16

February 4, 2016
The SCR production of RED by John Logan is impressive.

Learned that the Pasadena Museum of California Art has a Free First Friday deal.  Noon to five tomorrow, February 5, 2016.

ABC hosts the Oscars on February 28th.  All the hoopla about diversity seems to have simmered down. Chris Rock will have fodder for his hosting.  What we all seem to forget is that The Academy is a private Good Old Boys (and Ladies) Club.  The goal is to honor not only acting skills and best features, but beyond, to all the efforts that create the movies.  It's the membership that honors its own.  There were strong films that slapped us silly this year. Straight Outta Compton has one white guy and a string of impressive black actors who portray rappers who changed the world of music.  The problem, for me, was that the film glorified some of the most base instincts human beings experience.  Paul Giamatti was acting.  I'm not so sure about the rest of the cast.

Will Smith was robbed with the dismissal of CONCUSSION.  The film itself is politically incorrect, but well made (I thought) and David Morse was also robbed for his strong portrayal of Mike Webster.

The SAG Awards probably mirror what the acting awards for Oscar will be.  Everything else is a toss up.  If the Academy follows SAG, SPOTLIGHT will take home Best Picture.    DiCaprio may follow his 'Actor' award because in the Academy actors vote for actors. Only Best Picture is voted on by the entire Academy.

How did I get off on this?  Oh yes.. Diversity. When the Academy and the Business is finally opened to folks who now feel discriminated against, the melting pot / mosaic of fairness may rear its hoary head.  However, not one person who ever opted for art and show business had the idea that it would ever be 'fair.'  Or if they did, they soon learned that this life is fickle and never fair.  We work with our pals. (Or those on whom we may have the 'goods?')  hah.  Talent is important, of course, but for every Leonardo, there are a hundred guys who could deliver.

I miss working.  Yes.  I do.
