DAY TWENTY TWO

THE POWER HOUSE IS CHANGING.   When Rhy Hay and Paul Linke moved into this space on Second Street between Rose and Marine in Santa Monica, the creative spirit of The Company Theatre helped with lots of technical equipment. Paul's wife, Francesca, planted all kinds of beautiful plants around the perifery of the yard.  Paul and Dennis Redfield had a successful run with their Chair Hockey show using Trish Soodik's chairs that became goals.  The LA Times kept a box score of who was winning.

Into the eighties John Achorn produced play readings on a regular basis and started the tradition of Winter Solstice/Christmas/Beethoven's Birthday/Hannukah gatherings with come one, come all with five minutes of sharing.  Later, at The Church in Ocean Park, John and Susan Krebs produced a bigger version of the Solstice event with dozens of actors and others sharing food for a food bank and pot luck for the participants.  I always loved the guys who pooled their five minutes to read A Child's Christmas in Wales.

Venice is still Venice. The walk along the beach front with leathery old hippies has not changed. There is still terrible art for sale and at least one beautiful blonde involved in a healing session with a bald headed guy making mysterious motions over the woman, eyes closed, who, trusting and having paid a fee smiles a beatific smile: all better now.

Heading down Main Street, the denizens change.  There is still a local edge to the locals whose stories are myriad.  Don't know if this woman has anything to do with this New Testament left on a parking meter by this hip and happening clothing store.

Queen James version?  Including Psalms and Proverbs?  Mixing the Old and the New: an autodidactic preaching? Really? An overcast day in Santa Monica. Waiting for Ruscha.
